Semester grade calculator

High schools often run Q1 + Q2 + semester exam (classic 40/40/20) or similar. Enter each term percent and its weight — or use a preset — and get the semester percent and letter. You can leave the exam blank and ask what you need on it.

When to use — and when not to

When to use

Report card season; “what do I need on the semester exam?”; comparing 40/40/20 vs 45/45/10 school rules.

When not to

College course with homework/quiz/exam categories instead of quarters → weighted grade calculator. Single overall current + one final → final grade calculator.

Assumptions

Default preset 40% / 40% / 20% (Q1, Q2, exam). Alternate preset 45/45/10. Custom rows allowed. Scores are percents.

How it works

semester = (Q1×w1 + Q2×w2 + Exam×wE) / (w1+w2+wE)
if exam empty: solve Exam for a target semester %
  1. Pick a school preset or enter custom term weights.
  2. Enter each quarter/term percent.
  3. Leave the exam blank to solve for a target, or enter the exam score.
  4. Read semester % and letter.

Examples

Q1 88, Q2 85, Exam 90, weights 40/40/20

semester ≈ 87.2% → B+ on default ± scale

Q1 76, Q2 80, exam weight 20%, want semester 80

needed on exam ≈ 88%

Gotchas

  • Some districts average Q1/Q2 then weight the exam differently — match your handbook, not our preset.
  • Midterm ≠ Q1. If your school uses midterm + final only, rename the rows.
  • Plus/minus report cards may use a different conversion than your teacher’s classroom scale.
  • Incomplete quarters — do not invent a 0; wait or estimate honestly.
