When to use — and when not to
When to use
Term just ended; Dean’s list ballpark; “if I pull a B in chem.”
When not to
Full cumulative history — cumulative GPA. Course percent inside one class — course grade tools.
Assumptions
One term’s courses. Standard 4.0 ± map. Credits required for a real college term GPA.
How it works
term GPA = Σ(gp × credits) / Σ(credits)
- List this semester’s courses only.
- Enter letter + credits.
- Read term GPA.
Examples
4 cr A, 3 cr B, 3 cr B−, 1 cr A
≈ 3.34
replace B− with C
term GPA falls — credits still count
Gotchas
- Pass/fail courses may be excluded by policy — omit them if your school does.
- Repeated courses: follow school forgive rules manually.
- Semester grade (percents) ≠ semester GPA.
Compare
