When to use — and when not to
When to use
You asked “what’s my overall?” mid-semester; comparing two weight layouts; checking a spreadsheet.
When not to
GPA for multiple courses — cumulative GPA calculator. Equal scores only — grade average calculator.
Assumptions
One course, syllabus weights. Optional remaining assessment.
How it works
overall% = Σ(score × weight) / Σ(weight)
- Fill category scores and weights.
- Include or solve the remaining piece.
- Read overall % and letter.
Examples
Projects 88 @ 40%, Exams 80 @ 60%
overall 83.2%
add Final remaining @ 25% by adjusting other weights, target 85

Gotchas
- Overall ≠ cumulative GPA.
- Extra credit rarely fits as a negative weight — bump a category score instead.
- Two teachers, two cutoffs — set the letter scale if you care about letters.
