When to use — and when not to

When to use

Syllabus lists percents by category; you already know each category average; you want needed-on-final beside the table.

When not to

No category weights, just equal scores — grade average calculator. Only three boxes (current, weight, target) — final grade calculator.

Assumptions

Weights should aim at 100%. Partial terms normalize by the weights you entered. Remaining final row solves for needed %.

How it works

course% = Σ(score × weight) / Σ(weight)
  1. Add a row per syllabus category.
  2. Enter each category average and weight.
  3. Check Remaining on the final if it is not graded yet.
  4. Set a target course % and read needed or current course %.

Examples

HW 90 @ 25%, Midterm 80 @ 25%, Final empty @ 50%, target 85

needed on final ≈ 85%

Half the course still open.

Labs 100 @ 10%, Exams 72 @ 90%

course ≈ 74.8%

Gotchas

  • Typing assignment points into a category that expects an average mixes units.
  • Syllabus PDF weights can disagree with Canvas assignment groups — match the live settings.
  • This is course weights, not GPA credit hours.
